Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes Without Drugs by Dr. Neal Barnard is an excellent primer on the causes of diabetes and strategies to control the condition. Dr. Barnard notes that diabetes has been rare in places like China and Japan.

The author's research suggests that Type I Diabetes could be reduced by avoiding early childhood exposure to cow's milk. In addition, fatty foods and refined sugar are dietary taboos. Excess fat is bad because it interferes with how muscles function.

According to the author, the best strategy is to avoid animal products, reduce the consumption of vegetable oils and reduce the glycemic index (GI) with more healthful food choices.The GI ranks foods on how the level of blood glucose is impacted. This index measures the increments in blood glucose within two or more hours subsequent to consuming food.

The GI is most sensitive to foods high in carbohydrates. Foods high in protein or fat don't cause the blood glucose to increase to a level that would concern physicians as much.

Eliminating animal fat makes the blood less viscous and more watery. As a result, blood flow is easier and sediment decreases. In addition, fat cells interfere with insulin action. For instance, the author shows how beef has 37 fat calories; whereas, beans have four fat calories.

The author presents many sample recipes. In addition, there is an extensive set of references from authoritative citations like the Journal of the American Dietetic AssociationClinical Therapeutics, Preventive Medicine Pediatrics and The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes is excellent for implementing important dietary changes to manage insulin sensitivity intelligently.

This book provides a thorough scientific explanation of the causes, symptoms, and treatment of diabetes.  The book recommends a Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) diet, which has been shown to cut blood sugar levels, increase insulin sensitivity, and reduce or eliminate medications.

The reverse diabetes diet therefore recommends: 

  1. Choose food from plant sourcesthis reduces fat intake, increases plant protein, increases fibre, and increases thousands of health enhancing phytonutrients; grains (8 servings per day(s/d)), pulses (3 s/d), vegetables (4 or more s/d), and fruits (3 or more s/d).
  2. Set aside all animal products – this reduces fats (particularly trans and saturated fats) and eliminates intake of cholesterol and animal protein, which can reduce kidney functioning and cause bone calcium losses.
  3. Keep vegetable oils to a minimum – reduce fats to approx. 10% of calorific intake.
  4. Choose whole grain products (low glycaemic index www.glycaemicindex.com ) – avoid sugar and white flour.
  5. Avoid added salt, instead flavouring with health enhancing spices.
  6. A daily multi vitamin is a convenient source of vitamins B12 and D.

There are no limits on portions, calories, or carbohydrates.  The diet should be supported by a healthy lifestyle which includes no smoking, exercise that you enjoy (aerobic, strengthening, and stretching), stress management (yoga, meditation, or even simple breathing exercises), and psycho-social support (a group of friends that you are close to physically and not virtually).

The book also provides detailed information on starting a WFPB diet, weight loss, an enjoyable exercise routine and healthy plant based recipes for seven days and is highly recommended.

Until Dr. Barnard's scientific breakthrough, most health  professionals believed that once you developed diabetes, you  were stuck with it―and could anticipate one complication after another, from worsening eyesight and nerve symptoms  to heart and kidney problems. But as this groundbreaking work reveals, this simply is not true. 

In a series of studies―the  most recent funded by the National Institutes of Health―Dr.  Barnard has shown that it is possible to repair insulin function and reverse type 2 diabetes.
